Most people have watched an adult movie at some point in their lives, but you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone to actually admit it, which is why writing a review for something like FyreTV can be a little uncomfortable. Like Apple TV, Roku and Boxee Box, the Fyre BoXXX allows you to access streaming movies from a small set-top unit that connects online via your broadband Internet. The difference, however, is that FyreTV offers a certain type of movie – the NSFW kind that you watch by the scene. That’s right, FyreTV is an adult entertainment service for those who don’t feel safe getting their fix on the Web, and believe it or not, it’s actually pretty good.
There are a number of different services to choose from, but the monthly subscription is probably the best, because you not only get the set-top box for free, but you can also add additional pay per minute credits as you go. There’s also an option to buy movies and scenes to own, as well as monthly unlimited viewing packages for the various studios that range in price based on factors like the volume of titles and popularity. And if you’re worried about selection, FyreTV currently offers over 20,000 movies (which adds up to roughly 120,000 scenes), with new ones added every week.
There’s plenty to choose from (that is, unless you’re not a heterosexual male, in which case this service definitely isn’t for you), and FyreTV’s search options make it really easy to navigate their vast collection. You can search by category, title, star and studio, and can even narrow down the results by choosing to include or exclude certain categories from your search. Adding scenes to your playlist is also as easy as pushing the green plus button on the remote, and you can remove it just as easily with the red negative button. It’s a lot like giving a thumbs up or down on your TiVo.
As for the service itself, the streaming video delivers great quality and smooth playback as majority of the time, although there were some instances when the video froze to buffer, despite a solid DSL connection. It wasn’t that big of a problem for me, but it’s certainly worth noting in case you happen to experience slower Internet speeds or live in a high traffic area. The actual hardware is probably the biggest issue, as the remote control is so awkward to hold that it will likely hurt after only a few minutes, while the set-top box, although inconspicuous, isn’t invisible. As a result, I’m not sure how anyone who shares a living space could get away with owning a Fyre BoXXX without their roommates knowing about it.
That may sound like a big strike against FyreTV, but that doesn’t change the fact it’s still a great alternative to watching adult movies. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to anyone who’s married or has a girlfriend, but for those single guys out there, FyreTV is definitely worth checking out.
